George Duke - Dukey Treats
- George Duke flips it old school as he fiddles around with that funky taste in a furrow of passion. This veteran drops Dukey Treats, which takes us back to the cool '60s and '70s like we’re watching Shaft strut down the streets like a sly cat on the prowl. It’s old fashioned and is really bumping that brings the funk in a smooth style.
Dukey Treats seems to comment on social issues that span the gap of controversy between poverty and race. It starts off strong, hooking you with the opening track that really generates awesome vibes, but then it seems to get full of itself with a mixture of absurd bubbly sounds in figurative jam sessions and isolated tracks that aren’t really songs but merely skits. Duke even has big names helping him out, so you would think they wouldn’t want to waste time with going off on tangents. It picks up after this drought to break it down on songs that actually constitute as genuine music that offers a hefty dose of positivity and powerful funk.
Once it regains its course coordinates, that funky soul settles into that appealing groove. There’s certainly a lot of diversity amongst the tracks as they range from cool and fast, packing a fierce punch, to slower compositions that still have a heart of fire and passion, but tend to wander at times. You know the funk is back with the hiccups of blared horns to give it that savory flavor and kick.
