Sarah Brightman - Symphony
- It’s been several years since Sarah Brightman released an album. Brightman has always been considered a strong vocal artist and she doesn’t disappoint. With the emergence of “Symphony” Brightman has created a more Gothic sound to pair with her operatic voice.

The album has a strong opening and a strong ending. “Fleurs Du Mal” is rock-gothic, but still reminiscent of Phantom of the Opera. The strength of the choral group behind Brightman is staggering and powerful. “Running” is six minutes of passion; quite fitting for a dramatic movie sequence. The duet with Andrea Bocelli, “Canto Della Terra,” is a powerful song and both singers bring the song to a different plane. If Sarah Brightman’s version of “There You’ll Be” was used instead of Faith Hill’s on the movie “Pearl Harbor” then I could see the song becoming a big hit and catapulting a decent movie even higher.

There are a few songs that I have trouble with. Although the album attempts to capture a rock-gothic spirit, several songs just don’t fit. The duet “I Will Be with You” seems out of place and Paul Stanley’s voice doesn’t connect well with Brightman’s. Even though “Let It Rain” is a great song, it just doesn’t fit with the rest of the album. It’s not what a title like “Symphony” represents in my head.

If someone out there is looking for Sarah Brightman to use her high keys, this album may be a little disappointing. She doesn’t use the really high keys as often as hoped on the album. That doesn’t mean that she compromised, but some of the tracks almost sound too pop.

Without being a fan of Opera, Vocal, or Classical music, Sarah Brightman may be a hard transition, but fans of the said genres or of Sarah Brightman herself, Symphony is a welcome addition. There is an interesting range between gothic, operatic, and world music. No matter what Brightman sings, her music is uplifting and classy.
