Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs - Dirt Don't Hurt
- The sophomore album, Dirt Don’t Hurt, of Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs proves to have that age old country wisdom from across the pond. The lo-fi rooted UK folk band takes us down the dusty back roads scraping along as a drifter. Dirt Don’t Hurt clicks and clanks to give it that real sense of worn and torn experiences making up for the blues. The music that filters out passes through your mind like a mysterious loner or tumbleweed just wallowing in the midst of the gusts blowing dirt around.
There’s something sensual about the plucking of the strings and percussive slaps that really give Dirt Don’t Hurt a rustic feel. Some harmonies are rather slow moving like a drunk stumbling out of a saloon. Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs do the stop and go with the tempos as they speed them up and then slow them down. This UK group does the country folk genre justice splicing in some of the blues for a full blown effect.
The faster catchier tunes strut along with commanding appeal like they’re a top gunman and make heads turn. It seems the slower strums resemble a car running out of gas coming to an inevitable halt. These kind of just fade into a desolate backdrop. Dirt Don’t Hurt has some righteous tracks that will make you leap up, but it also has some that peter out. This might shoe some people away, but overall it has a lighthearted bounce to its step. Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs show us what the blues are about with UK take on it with some folksy roots.
