Melissa Ferrick - Goodbye Youth
- Melissa Ferrick’s Goodbye Youth possesses a hypnotic and sharp sound with heightened strums of excitement that are plucked. It’s a range of slow tempos, but what gives it those firm shots that really pack a punch are the guitar riffs and strums and backup music like an obscure whistling, which is nicely executed. The usage of the guitar is like injections of adrenaline that make the songs pulsate with excitement and blossom into beautiful ballads. These sad melodies resemble a drifter who’s walked down a few bad roads in life.
You can hear the heartbeat of the music that acts as an extension of Melissa’s soul. Her sweet voice speaks of troubled times, but she eases us into it with a sprinkling of hope. You can hear the pain scorch out of her in a controlled, fine-tuned manner. The guitar strums are really quite excellent as they provide the accents and add that certain fireball of passion to drive the songs home. Melissa’s voice sells the songs, but those quick guitar one-twos really push us over.
From the listen, it seems like Goodbye Youth is a one-on-one play between you and Melissa. I get an empty feeling coupled with being lonesome, but the void is half filled with Melissa’s preaching. Some might say Melissa Ferrick’s music belongs in a coffee shop. It has the tone, but there’s more there. The songs tend to go from slow to slower, never hitting anything into the sunshine of day as a dark and gloomy feeling overtakes us despite Melissa’s vigor and relentlessness. Goodbye Youth stands alone amid the desolate, unaccomplished drifting and dying like decaying carcasses. It triumphs.
