Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily
- If you’re looking for some music that will soothe you to sleep, I suggest you treat your ears to some tracks off of Natalie Merchant’s 1995 album Tigerlily. Perhaps you recall listening to her hit Carnival, which made the #10 spot on Billboard’s Top 100 in 1995. Aside from this song, Tigerlily has a number of tracks that have the same soft, low-beat rhythms and instrumentals combined with Natalie’s serene, contralto voice.
For example, San Andreas Fault, my favorite track off the album, starts off the CD with Natalie’s gentle non-lyrical vocals that lie somewhere between humming and scatting. Add in a subtle mix of instrumentals and metaphorical lyrics and you got yourself a thought-provoking yet laid back tune.
A track you may be more familiar with is Jealousy, which was Natalie’s third single, released in 1996. This one differs from the others with its more upbeat tempo, and is said to be about Natalie’s broken engagement with record executive David Bither. One of its appealing aspects is her signature “ooh-ing” that is present in many of the tracks, accentuating the calmness of her music.
Your tiring and stressful days can be relieved by listening to a couple of songs from Natalie Merchant’s Tigerlily.
