M.I.A. - Kala
- M.I.A.’s second album, dubbed Kala, is a reggae/rap/electronic mixture that the artist herself describes as “other.” Each song on the CD seems to have its own musical genre, and it is all equally amazing. “Paper Planes” was released as a single after being featured on the trailer for the movie, Pineapple Express. The song feels very relaxing and lazy, but the gunshots in the chorus give it a very hardcore sound that sets M.I.A. apart from other artists. “Come Around” features Timbaland and is a typical Timbaland song with its catchy drum beat and rapping. On the other hand, most of the other songs on Kala are tribal and rhythmic. “Boyz” is catchy and enthusiastic. It’s easy to sing along to the repetitive lyrics and the beat is extremely danceable, even for the dancing-challenged.

Kala is more than good beats, the songs also have meanings. M.I.A. focused a lot of her lyrics on immigration and politics, and she managed to not seem pretentious. Kala is named after M.I.A.’s mother, and she drew on a lot of her mother’s experiences when creating the music for the CD. She put her heart and soul into this album, and it shows. It isn’t often that a CD is both catchy and meaningful, but Kala achieves these high standards.
