The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious
- The Hives, a group of five men best known for their matching black and white suits and impressive live performances, have been gaining more exposure than ever this past year, thanks to their single, “Tick Tick Boom,” now a mainstay of commercials, movie trailers and video games alike. However, the group got its real breakout from the single, “Hate to Say I Told You So,” off 2000’s Veni Vidi Vicious, an energetic and infectious (pun intended) album that still bears listening eight years later.

Veni Vidi Vicious flows extremely well, letting up on the manic energy and catchy guitar hooks only once, during the slow, out of place “Find Another Girl.” Other than that track, there isn’t a weak song in the bunch. “Die, All Right!” is especially fun; along with “Hate to Say I Told You So,” it’s the album’s best.

With lyrics like “do what I please, gonna spread the disease” and “gave my middle finger a brand new start,” the Hives have an in-your-face, stick-it-to-the-man attitude that, coupled with their boundless energy, makes them a genuine modern punk band – and a great one at that. Do yourself a favor and get their second studio album, which the band members described the best: “a velvet glove with brass knuckles, both brutal and sophisticated at the same time.”
