Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band - Act Your Age
- Act Your Age is the fourth recorded album for Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. It recently got Grammy nominations and it’s no surprise. This album is fun and has a great, almost live quality to it. The whole album is great for anyone who is a fan of up-tempo jazz and big band music.

The best song on the album has to be “Yesterdays” because of its beautiful piano work and combination with the band. The song is truly deserving of a Grammy nod. Another standout on this album is “Backrow Politics.” The horn section on “Backrow Politics” is amazing and probably the most energetic song on the whole album. One gets so immersed in the track that no one would notice that it is eight minutes long. This album is great to listen to from start to finish.

The album benefits from great guest musicians like Chick Corea, Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour. Corea, on the song “Senor Mouse,” does a great rendition of his own song. Patti Austin does some great vocal work on the Earth, Wind, and Fire classic, “September,” as well.

Big Band is not as popular as it was in the '40s or '50s but with Gordon Goodwin and his band, he’s shown the same passion and dedication to the craft. By assembling a great band, guest musicians, and producers, Goodwin would make any fan of big band proud. This album was clearly made with passion because all the tracks are great. If you are still wary, there is a bonus track on Amazon that is free to download.
