Duffy - Rockferry
- Duffy rides the wave of new, soulful females from Britain. With artists like Estelle, Amy Winehouse, and Adele all making their marks on the music industry, Duffy follows along with her album, Rockferry. The album is a little more nostalgic and gritty than many pop albums. It is a great opening to a career, showcasing a classic sound with a soulful voice.
The songs on the album are a mix of highs and lows. Most songs maintain a ballad like feel to them. The song, "Mercy," is a high energy song with the classic '60s twist to it. It was chronically played everywhere from commercials to television shows and it's very understandable: It's quite catchy. Her other single, "Warwick Avenue," is a slower but soulful song. The title track, "Rockferry," is also a great song, showcasing a lot of young talent from the singer-songwriter.
The problem with Duffy is that her voice doesn't have as much power; instead she depends on a nasal sound, almost channeling Fran Drescher. Some of the lyrics of the album are a little childish, especially in comparison to artists like Adele whose album, 19, was produced when she was 19 and has a very mature lyrical style.
In comparison to the other artists, Duffy emerges as a lusty singer. The album does lack a few tracks; two tracks could have rounded out the album better. There have been comparisons to the great Dusty Springfield, but only time will show whether or not she will make as much of an impact.
