Danny Elfman - The Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack
- One doesn’t normally think of The Nightmare Before Christmas as a Christmas movie, rather a Halloween movie, but the movie is a great alternative to the classic Christmas movies. The soundtrack was composed and written by Danny Elfman,

There is a wonderful frantic pace and feeling to the whole album. The opening track is great, something you wish were added to all soundtracks: spoken sections of the movie. “This is Halloween” is both joyous of the Halloween season, but shows the passion of each of the citizens. The instrumental sections are beautifully composed by Danny Elfman. Danny Elfman also provides the singing voice for Jack Skellington and his lament is a great way to understand the character. His passion extends past the video and to the soundtrack successfully. The frailty of Sally in “Sally’s Song” is a beautiful contrast to the rest of the album. The final track is a great wrap-up for the whole album.

The order of the album fits perfectly with the movie, it’s like listening to the movie without visuals. This soundtrack shows that interesting combination of Danny Elfman and Tim Burton. Nightmare is probably the strongest for the two; this soundtrack is better than The Corpse Bride or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

If you find the 2006 publication of this album, the standout has to be Panic! at the Disco’s cover of “This Is Halloween” which is a great nod to the classic. Fiona Apple’s version of “Sally’s Song” isn’t bad either.

For a Christmas playlist, I would suggest the tracks “What’s This,” “Making Christmas,” and “Christmas Eve Montage.” These songs have the touch of Halloween, but have this great spirit of adventure and creativity that a lot of Christmas songs lack; it’s a great alternative to the everyday Christmas playlist. On the other hand, “This is Halloween” and “Oogie Boogie’s Song” fit perfectly for Halloween; even though Oogie’s song has Santa, it’s a little scary and fits more with the nature of Halloween.

The whole album is a great melding of Halloween and Christmas spirits and could fit perfectly on either playlist. To most that haven’t seen the movie, the soundtrack would totally ruin the movie because it is basically the radio version of the movie. Danny Elfman was at his best when creating the soundtrack to this movie, the composition is stellar and fits for something that is both Disney and Tim Burton in nature.
