Anywhere I Lay My Head consists of 10 John Waits cover songs and one original song called "Song for Jo." The CD is folksy and natural-sounding, but due to Scarlett Johansson's strange voice, it is impossible to genuinely enjoy the music.
"Falling Down" is slow and mournful. It might have a good message, but it is difficult to focus on the lyrics because of Johanson's distracting voice. "Song for Jo" is eerie, with bell sounds in the front and Johansson whispering the words in the background.
The artistic qualities of this album are commendable; "Anywhere I Lay My Head" has a creative, one-of-a-kind sound, but Johansson's voice is blaring and monotone. It is almost embarrassing to listen to; however, you have to give Scarlett Johansson credit for being different. Most actresses, such as Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff, have come out with poppy, dance music. Scarlett has branched out and, although the CD is weird, it is very sincere. Johansson sounds like she is really putting her soul out for the listener to hear, and it takes a lot of courage to try something so different from the usual.
