The All-American Rejects - When the World Comes Down
- The All-American Rejects, like many other great bands, tend to put out an outstanding album that leaves fans begging for more, tour the world and then disappear for a few years while they work on the follow-up. As annoying as it may be for their followers, it’s a method that’s worked for them in the past. Except something’s off with their formula this time around.
It’s been three years since their smash hit Move Along, and I’m sure a tour is coming soon, but When the World Comes Down unfortunately isn’t that outstanding. In fact, given the group’s track record, it’s a little disappointing.
It is immediately apparent that When the World Comes Down is not quite Move Along or their oft-forgotten but still excellent self-titled debut. The album alternates dangerously between great pop rock songs that remind you of the band’s past efforts – like the fantastic angry ex song “Gives You Hell” and “Real World” – and entirely forgettable tracks that make you worry about what the band might become – like “Damn Girl” and “Mona Lisa (When the World Comes Down).” They’re clearly going for something different here, and while it does pay off in “Another Heart Calls,” a great track featuring girl band The Pierces, it results in an uneven album from a previously consistent band that didn’t need changing in the first place.
With any luck, the lack of buzz around what the CD cover proclaims one of the year’s most anticipated albums will force the band to reconsider their definition.
