Various Artists - Grey's Anatomy, Vol. 3
- The Grey's Anatomy, Vol. 3: Original Television Soundtrack follows the emotion of the cast of the ABC program. The soundtracks to Grey’s have mastered finding Indie-Pop songs that fit the television show. The selection of songs are a wonderful complement to the television series.
The album starts off with a bang. The track, “Young Folks,” by Peter, Bjorn, and John, has a '60s vibe, with the same drum sample from Garbage’s “Stupid Girl.” It’s upbeat and flows well into the next track, “Again & Again,” by the Bird and the Bee. In the most positive light, “Again and Again” sounds like the perfect Target commercial song. The mid-tempo “A Cold Wind Will Blow Through Your Door” is calming and positive.
The slower tracks are equally as fun and beautiful. Ingrid Michaelson’s track, “Keep Breathing,” is a wonderful combination of piano, strings, and harmonization. Even in its repetitive nature, the song crescendos into a beautiful arrangement. Brandi Carlile’s “The Story” is the breakout song of the album. Carlile’s shrill voice is a perfect ending to a great album. It leaves listeners joyous and hopeful. Carlile is the next generation Melissa Etheridge with the rasp in her voice and her point of view.
There are a handful of tracks that don’t fit the rest of the album. The track, “Falling or Flying,” by Grace Porter, is a little heavy-hearted. “Ain't Nothing Wrong with That” is a good track, but it just doesn’t fit with the rest of the album. The song is close to a pop-rap track and sticks out like a sore thumb against the rest of the tracks. Paolo Nutini’s track, “Million Faces,” is sleep inducing, especially since it follows “Ain’t Nothing Wrong with That.” The track lacks anything to make it stand out.
The cast of Grey’s Anatomy go through tons of emotions, but try their best in the end to tie everything up and end on a good note. The relationships between all the characters may be a little over dramatic, but there is something that connects to viewers. This album is a great place to sample different indie-pop artists.
