Joss Whedon - Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
- Sing-Along Blogs . . . now that’s an interesting concept. Although technically it’s a “Vlog” (Video Blog), Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog follows Dr. Horrible, performed by Neil Patrick Harris, as he attempts to become a notorious villain. The Blog was composed by Joss Whedon, whose name probably sounds familiar if you were a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and remember the episode, “Once More, with Feeling.” The album succeeds in following the whole blog, but there are slight gaps.
The album is funny and has this everyday style that you don’t normally get from a traditional musical. Even with the “villain” being the main character, Dr. Horrible becomes the convincing almost-“hero” and Neil Patrick Harris succeeds in his everyday man portrayal. His singing voice isn’t amazing (it’s very good though), but that’s what makes it great. Felicia Day has a heavenly and lighthearted voice, exemplifying the upbeat nature of her character, Penny. The song, “Penny’s Song,” is amazingly light and without the countering video of Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer, it has a different angle of positivity. Captain Hammer, played by Nathan Fillion, is the epitome of every cocky jock in the form of a narcissistic superhero. All his songs he’s included in, especially “Everyone’s a Hero,” are hysterical and make you love to hate him.
The best part of this album is the harmonization. “A Man’s Gotta Do” and “My Eyes” have very interesting melodies. “My Eyes” has a great juxtaposition between the two characters and the two opposing messages are great. It makes you want to listen to the track several times just to listen to the lyrics. The hysterical fans in “So They Say” make that song. Ending a song with the term “four sweater-vests” is original.
I understand that all the songs are great, but I’m almost convinced that the whole movie/blog should have been incorporated. The gap between “My Freeze Ray” and “Bad Horse Chorus” is really awkward. The whole video is only about 43 minutes long; the whole thing would have fit perfectly on an album.
Overall, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is a great album, a diversion from a typical musical or even a television show. Harris succeeds in making a villain a lovable character. No one wants to be a loser. It’s a shame that the album is so short, because it is original and really funny.
