Inception

I found myself easing back into the pleasures of jazz music when I started listening to McCoy Tyner's "Inception." Perhaps I really enjoyed this album because it has been a long time since I have listened to jazz. Or perhaps it is Tyner's fleet-fingered playing of the piano that makes his music so delightful.

As part of the John Coltrane Quartet for many years, Tyner composed the songs on this album. His quick, yet laidback, jazzy piano playing mixes well with the mild bass and drums played by others of the Coltrane Quartet. We can hear this fun combination in such tracks as "Inception" and "Effendi."

Tyner's skillful fingers express the fleeting and adventurous feel of jazz music, making it sound all over the place if you will, but in a fun way that is pleasing to the ear. His fast fingers create a sound that is both at ease and intense. This interesting balance of sound manipulated artfully by his piano playing and the rest of the quartet is why I like this CD. In other songs such as "Blue Monk" and "Satin Doll," Tyner's piano-tickling is slower and more controlled, which help to create a bouncy feel. The variety in not just speed, but emphasis of the drums and bass make the tracks on "Inception" spontaneous, and therefore fun to listen to.
