Ann Hampton Callaway - At Last
- This offering from Ann Hampton Callaway is the definition of very cool jazz and is a clear representation of just how good it can be when consummate musicians come together to produce what is obviously a labor of love.
The title track, a cover of Etta James’s “At Last,” may have been in the news headlines recently thanks to the inauguration, but is just slightly less noteworthy here, as it doesn’t quite capture the same intensity and passion as the original. Otherwise though, this is a great collection for any jazz fan to own. Callaway’s rich, deeply expressive vocal style meshes with some great piano work and serves many of the song selections well. In particular, check out “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” which is every bit as wistful as Judy Garland’s original version. “Landslide” actually translates better here than the original, with vocals that pack a stronger emotional punch than the one sung by Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac.
All in all, if you’re a jazz aficionado, this is a must-have CD to add to your collection and is what great jazz is all about.
