Kate Mann - Things Look Different When the Sun Goes Down
- If Scottish singer KT Tunstall was a) American and b) actually as indie as she wishes to be, she might sound a bit like Kate Mann.
Mann, a dreadlocked songstress from Portland, channels elements of folk, blues and country into her own brand of calm Americana on her new album, Things Look Different When the Sun Goes Down. And despite some issues with lyrical content and a bit of a repetitive nature, the album produces a handful of truly stellar tracks.
One such track, “Needles and Pins,” produces a musical backdrop so serenely beautiful that you almost forget the song’s lyrics make absolutely no sense. For Mann, a former high-school teacher, this might come as a bit of a surprise, but fortunately, her moody combination of fiddle and guitar carry it past this problem; it is truly a track to get lost in.
In most cases, Mann’s music is the main attraction on Things Look Different When the Sun Goes Down. Her folksy lyrics seem to attempt to tell stories without actually telling them, ultimately lacking a coherent direction. But in the end, the instrumentation and song construction is admirable enough to overpower that deficiency.
