Alison Brown - The Company You Keep
- Although Alison Brown’s latest CD, “The Company You Keep,” won’t be officially released until next month, the artist has been quite prolific in many areas over the years. The best example is that she co-founded Compass Records, the company her albums are released on, with her husband 15 years ago. She also used to be part of Alison Krauss and Union Station and bandleader for Michelle Shocked, which should be a hint as to what kind of music Brown does.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Brown received the International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year in 1991. But if you think the banjo isn’t a cool instrument to play, you’re wrong – at least, not how Brown plays it.

“The Company You Keep” mixes bluegrass, country, classical, jazz and a little bit of Irish jig thrown in for good measure. Out of ten songs, there was only one I didn’t like. Track seven, “Over Nine Waves,” sounded a bit too much like Muzak for me. My favorites were the opening track, “Crazy Ivan,” which has great piano mixed in with the banjo, and track five, “Under the (Five) Wire,” whose title goes along with the often-frantic pace of the song.

Even if you don’t generally like bluegrass, give Alison Brown a trial run. You might be surprised!
