Boombox - Visions of Backbeat
- Boombox’s Vision of Backbeat is a funky, eclectic mix of sounds, perfect for the dance floor. This two-man band, producer/engineer/DJ/drummer Russ Randolph and producer/DJ/vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux, simply knows how to rock a beat.
Their heavy baseline is layered with both synthesized and instrumental sounds that pulse through a crowded room. There is something contagious about the rhythm that will have you dancing for hours.
The only feature of the album that calls for improvement is the vocals. Godchaux’s vocal stylings unfortunately leave much to be desired. His guitar skills may be tuned, but the monotony and melodramatic pitch of his voice is an unfortunate deviation from their impulsive sound.
The track, “Midnight on the Run,” is definitely a favorite pick of the album. Its clean, crisp beginning builds in complexity and harmony, maintaining a steady, funky tempo that will keep the attention and energy of any audience. Once again though, this jam is undoubtedly set off by the bored, unenergetic vocals.
Boombox shines brightest at their live shows. The energy projected with their coordination of lights and sound is unequaled as the crowd is overcome by the penetrating force of the music pumping from the speakers. It is an experience unlike any other.
But if you can’t experience them in person, Vision of Backbeat is still a worthwhile purchase. Despite the dichotomy of vocals and instruments, it is the type of album that puts a funky little bounce in your step as you walk with it on your iPod. Boombox’s Vision of Backbeat is a must have.
