- The Magic Of You
- "The Magic Of You" by "Movin' " Melvin Brown covers a diverse mix of musical genres, including soul, R&B, rock and roll and blues. Add into the mix a relevance for today’s discussions of racial harmony in America, and the result is musical gold.
Songs such as "Whoto Man," a scathing political indictment, and “Communication” reinforce this point especially well, hammering home their obvious social messages while still retaining their appealing lyrical qualities. "People" is a very funky track, while "Whether You Should Live" is genuinely pretty.
Brown possesses a uniquely quirky vocal style – which in most cases, adds to the charm of this recording. But his deep, rich voice does tend to work on some tracks better than others. This is especially evident on "Send Me Some Love," which slows down the tempo to perfectly complement the lead and backing vocals a la Otis Redding – and is outstanding as a result.
The refrain of "You Got Something" says, "You got somethin' that makes me wanna move" – and that is certainly a remarkably apt description of this whole album.
