What It Is

If jazz can be badass, The Burr Johnson Band has made it so. In fact, B.B. King himself said that Johnson is "one bad ass mother - - - - - -." Released back in February, Johnson's ninth album is "What It Is."

"What It Is" consists of 13 songs which range from typical jazz to funky jazz to rock jazz. Track three, "Crossfire," is the definition of badass jazz. It's the first track of three on the album to feature Johnson's voice. That also adds an element of uniqueness to the music, as jazz doesn't often have vocals.

The first track, "It Figures," has a funky, electronic feel to it, while track eight, "Another Shuffle," is a bit psychedelic. But no matter what the specific vibe of the song is, each one is equally well played and smooth. It's clear why Johnson has worked with so many well-known artists such as Ray Charles, Spyro Gyra, Lauryn Hill, and B.B. King.

Any fan of the guitar would be remiss in skipping out on at least one listening to "What It Is." The seventh track, "Guitar School," might even give you some ideas.
