A Camp - Colonia
- A Camp's "Colonia" is a roller coaster ride of emotional sentimentality that still has room for improvement.
I will admit that I responded to this recording in much the same way I reacted to first hearing Persson's former band, The Cardigans - as somewhat forgettable fluff pop. That being said, the band puts forth a passable effort. Persson's voice is uniquely plaintive and defiant at the same time, especially on "Here are Many Wild Animals."
"My America" is fun and upbeat- the only criticism I can level is that the vocal style is very monotone, nowhere more obviously than in this song. It is too one-note, not versatile enough. "Stronger than Jesus" is ironically weak; while Persson's voice is good, the lyrics had no impact.
"Eau De Colonia," however, serves as a brief instrumental interlude only, but stands out as a truly lovely moment on the album. I also liked "It’s Not Easy to be Human" – perhaps because I myself have felt that way sometimes! It had something of a “music box” lilting quality that I found appealing.
However, there is an uneven quality to "Colonia" that ultimately just falls short, despite its best efforts.
