Tony Bennett - The Complete Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Recordings
- Tony Bennett’s timeless voice and legendary talent are put on full, brilliant display on the CD, The Complete Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Recordings.
Longtime collaborators, Bennett and Evans show us just how they’ve managed to make such beautiful music together. Tracks such as “Some Other Time” are subtly emotional, while “When in Rome” shows us why Bennett is a master of phrasing and arrangement. Every track found here is so masterful you run out of descriptive words.
“My Foolish Heart” is delivered with a quiet passion, with lyrics that are so beautiful - they just don’t write them like this anymore. Conversely, the eighth track on the CD, “But Beautiful,” reminded me of a love song from a Broadway show, as it was just a little bit on the corny side and dripping with sentimentality. On “Days of Wine and Roses,” the vocals hint at the reason why Bennett has been an American icon on the music scene for decades – his voice is coolly sensitive, although it is slightly weak at times, but in no way does this detract from the quality of the recording. In fact, it adds to the charm.
For my money though, it is “Make Someone Happy” that puts Bennett right in his element, and represents everything that makes him one of the greats. He has perfected the delivery of the slow, simple and sweet romantic ballad (in the style of his classic, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”) to such a degree that it puts a smile on the face of anyone who listens, as will just about every song on this CD.
