Zap Mama - Recreation
- Recreation represents the best of diverse elements coming together to create unforgettably cool world music, and Zap Mama achieves this in a way that is so unique and interesting, breaking with conventions and pushing boundaries to astonish and amaze at every turn.
Look up the definition of "infectious groove" in the dictionary, and you will no doubt see a picture of Zap Mama. Every song injects fun and funk and makes you want to move. "Singing Sisters" has a snappy back beat reminiscent of the great Bobby McFerrin, while "Do You Wanna?" does it up Brazilian style, to sultry effect.
"Drifting" is soulful and sweet with a feel-good melody, but by far, the highlight was "Harlem," which had the feel of Erykah Badu does Paris, with a coolly European r&b vibe. "Togetherness" was reminiscent of Lauryn Hill, showcasing a hip-hop beat with an emotional center and heart. But ironically, it was a track called "Chill Out" that made me want to get up and dance and was a great cap off to this collection of tunes. This is the perfect CD for a rainy day!
