Only by the Night

Kings of Leon's newest album, released in September 2008, Only by the Night, features the best in contemporary southern rock. The album is one of the only albums I can sustain myself for listening to all the way through, without flipping to one of my favorite songs.

The five-piece family rock band made one of their best albums to date. The album starts off with "Closer," which sets off the tone for the rest of the record. There are haunting rhythm guitar melodies that start and end the song, with an ending guitar solo that encapsulates the grittiness of almost garage guitar rock.

"Crawl" is a graphic song about a destructive relationship, or a love/hate relationship. That is symbolized through the harsh sounding, yet melodic guitar riffs done throughout the song.

Then the song is transitioned to "Sex on Fire," which is exactly to what the title refers. In an interview, lead singer/rhythm guitarist Caleb Followhill explains that the song is about amazing sex. The song cripples the listener when Caleb screams out "You!" The drums accelerate the feeling and convey the sense of actually doing the deed.

"Cold Desert" is an extra song that ends the album in finality. The song gives the listener a sense of ending, a sense of catharsis. It feels like you are at peace when you hear this song, with love and life.

There are a good amount of songs that standout. Their singles from the album, "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody," display a great amount of musical talent. Both songs hit great success. "Sex on Fire" won a Grammy Award this year for Best Rock Song.

Overall, the entire album is my favorite song, and it is definitely worth actually going out and buying.
