311 - Uplifter
- The definition of "uplifter" is something or someone that elevates or improves the spiritual, social, and intellectual condition of something. Unfortunately, 311's ninth album doesn't exactly uplift the listener, especially if that listener isn't familiar with the band's sound. The band's last album, "Don't Tread On Me," was released in 2005. Four years later, "Uplifter" sprang into existence and the reality is … fans will not be so impressed.
It is safe to say that 311 has a love for rock, rap, ska, funk, and reggae, since every song they have written has incorporated all of these genres to create their own unique musical style. Although the band has had great success in the music industry—having all their albums, except for one, land a spot in the top fifteen of the Billboard 200 and five of their songs becoming hits on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks—"Uplifter" did not support these accomplishments.
311's instrument and rhythm skills on "Uplifter" will make any novice on an instrument exude jealousy. On "Never Ending Summer," the guitar solo makes you feel as though you have traveled back in time to the 1980s, when players performed their electric guitar solos behind their heads.
However, Nick Hexum, the vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the band, sings lyrics that are nothing out of the ordinary. If you're yearning for great metaphors and colorful lyrics such as these, you will never quite get what you are looking for as you dissect the album.
It would not be a surprise for 311 to make another album that receives ratings higher than eight by every reviewer and fan alike. The highly anticipated "Uplifter" would be lucky to get a one thumb up.
