M.I.A. - Arular
- The British musician, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A, released her debut album "Arular" in 2005. Not exactly grasping the specific musical genre on her music, she magically organizes hip hop, electronic, dance hall, and even world music in each song on the album.

"Arular," which is named after her politically acclaimed father in Sri Lanka, is one of those albums listeners either love or hate, with no in between. Almost all of the songs on the CD speak of warfare between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. From heavy illustrations of militant fighting methods, like “Bucky Done Gun” and “Fire Fire,” to songs with onomatopoeia that spark warlike sounds, such as in “Pull up the People,” the album is unapologetic with its armed hostile language.

M.I.A.’s single “Sunshower” has a happy-go-lucky beat, which is in opposition of the lyrics. The words have a profound message that may make your skin crawl. In a section of the song, the lyrics are “Semi 9 and snipered him / On that wall they posted him / They corned him and then just murderer him / He told them he didn’t know them / He wasn’t there they didn’t know them / They showed him a picture then / Ain’t that you with the Muslims?”

Overall, in order to understand the lyrical content of the album, much research about the Sri Lankan Civil War needs to be done. On the other hand, in order to have a great dance party, make sure that M.I.A.’s "Arular" is in the rotation.
