Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
- What can you say about Dillinger Escape Plan? This is a band that laughs at your pathetic notions of time signature and tempo. There is a method to the madness here, but don’t try to decode it at first. Most of these songs begin sounding as noise; to really experience them, let the song play past the first 15 seconds. After a while, you might think to yourself, “Man, this is ugly as hell. But it sure is catchy!”
Songs like "Highway Robbery" incorporate breakdowns and other beat techniques common to hardcore punk and heavy metal. When the music actually have a melody, half the time it is played in a dissonant scale of flat fifth, seventh, and ninth chords. Three songs on the album, however are accessible to a casual listener. More than accessible, these almost sound like hits. "Phone Home" sounds like a Nine Inch Nails cover, with the lead singer murmuring over a hip-hop beat. "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants" is a fantastic song, and if Dillinger received radio play, this one could definitely become a hit.
These guys are explorers. They constantly change and shift their sounds in experimental ways. What they are learning to do is to explore more traditional styles as well as heavy experimental music alone. Pursuing that vein could make them a successful mainstream band. But that’s not very punk.
