Big L - The Big Picture
- Rapper Big L was shot down on the same street he was born on. If that says anything about this man's dedication, then it's easy to imagine what could emerge from his dedication to rap.
The greatest hits album "The Big Picture" is a perfect example of his masterfulness with words and sounds. His fast, story oriented structure allowed him to create rhymes that read well, that had a theme, a focal point.
"Ebonics" is a rhyme about slang, a song that just hits brilliantly again and again. Other times L is a storyteller. "Casualties of a Dice Game" is a long story that has gambling, a car chase, and even a moral.
A particular high point of the album is "'98 Freestyle," a recording that demonstrates L's ability to think four steps ahead not only on the spot, but tired as well!
Still, he, like all artists, has formulas, and after a while L's formulas begin to grow old. Other songs on the album sound as though he is sharing lyrics among his songs, and there are two versions of "Casualties," the second of which really adds nothing new or original.
