Aenima
Tool's sound certainly has changed over the years. At the beginning of their career, the sound of the band was much grungier than it is now. Over time, this band has melded mellow psychedelic music with growling guitars and serious baselines.
Over this time, however, only a small fraction of their songs, and only songs from their early period ("Sober" and "Prison Sex") have received any attention or play on the radio.
Their album "Aenima" may change that, at least for a while. This is an album which is more traditionally metal than others they have put out. Songs like the opening "Stinkfist" and the title track utilize both churning drums, and in a new move for Tool, 4/4 time signatures.
Many die-hards will accuse Tool of selling out, but as Maynard Keenan says on the track "Hooker with a Penis," "I sold out long before you knew my name."
