D-Block - No Security
- The most exciting thing about a D-Block, also known as the L.O.X., record is that you’re listening to some of rap’s most venomous veterans. Jadakiss and Styles P always deliver hot sixteens (Sheek, not so much), so any track the three are on is sure to deliver hard-hitting punch lines. But on “No Security,” the trio is rarely together, instead allowing their D-Block under-officers to fill a majority of the disc's space. In fact, Jada, the group’s most ferocious MC, is only featured on three of the album’s twelve tracks.
Looking past those failed expectations, “No Security” is a pretty decent group effort. The gritty, tough as nails sound that’s become commonplace for D-Block is all over this release. “That’s D-Block” sounds straight from the gutter, as Styles shouts the chorus with enough bravado to ward off any potential foes. Meanwhile, “Round & Round” is so poorly executed and unimaginative (“the wheels on the bus go round and round”) that the lack of D-Block heavy hitters becomes a serious problem.
The tracks that do feature the L.O.X. mainstays are the album's best. “Get That Paper” showcases the three D-Block generals over a smooth-as-silk beat doing what they do best, killing each verse with deadly precision. “Brother’s Keeper” is the type of emotional thug spit that allows the group to remain diverse, over a decade after their emergence. But those type of songs are too few and far between.
They’ll be in abundance on “New L.O.X. Order” when Sheek, Styles, and Jada shed their protégés and deliver the L.O.X. album everyone will be waiting for. Until then though, “No Security” is enough to whet one’s appetite and marinate on the D-Block up-and-comers. They have a long way to go but at least they're in good company.
