The Dusty Foot Philosopher

K'naan, the nephew of Somalia's most famous singer, Magool, and grandson of the poet, Haji Mohamed, has followed in his family's footsteps by discovering his artistic talent. He has combined music and poetry, which led him to find hip-hop.

The music on his album, "The Dusty Foot Philosopher," embraces his roots and tells stories about his ever-changing life. He was born in Mogadishu, Somalia but moved to Harlem, New York City to escape the Somali Civil War, and finally relocated in Toronto, Canada where there was a large Somali community. His life is captivating and the same can be said about his album.

The album welcomes traditional music from Africa by the use of indigenous instruments and Somali language. K'naan taught himself to speak English by listening to American rappers. As in the song, "Until the Lion Learns to Speak," he beats on an African drum and incorporates the Somali language in the verses. Even more interesting, "Wash It Down" uses a water rhythm that is made by the splashing and slapping of water.

For those who have seen "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay," hopefully you enjoyed the song, "In the Beginning," that was ironically played at the end of the movie. This song is also on the album and has become popular since the film. I now have the song as my ringtone!

Since you've taken the time to read this review, I encourage you to take the time to listen to the album.
