Garden State - Self-titled
- There are probably a lot of fans of the film "Garden State" that reside or were born in New Jersey, but anybody in any state would appreciate the gentle and genuine music on the movie’s soundtrack. Handpicked by the director and star of the movie himself, Zach Braff has great taste in music and is astonishingly able to create a compilation that fits the movie to a T. Braff was received a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for a Motion Picture for the music on the album.
With plenty of acoustic songs, like “New Slang” by The Shins, “The Only Living Boy in New York” by Simon & Garfunkel, “Winding Road” by Bonnie Somerville, and “Such Great Heights” by Iron & Wine, the movie is amplified. The music is like the sweet strawberries on top of the cheesecake.
The film is about a young man going back to his hometown for his mother’s funeral. While he is there, he falls in love and realizes that he had been suppressing his true character, and in due course, he breaks free. This intense plot is balanced out with the peaceful and light music on the compilation. “Let Go” by Frou Frou has a techno-feel and has lyrics that describe being liberated. Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic” has frank lyrics, like “We live in a beautiful world / Yes we do.” All the songs are intimate and support the plot of the film.
The soundtrack album is certainly one of the best I’ve heard. The songs will ease any emotional pain.
