Chuck Berry - 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Best of Chuck Berry
- Chuck Berry is one of the inventors of rock and roll. In "The Best of Chuck Berry" he shows you what rock and roll music sounds, feels, and even looks like.
This is dance music in its most simplistic form. The lyrics give life to your imagination. His rapid-fire guitar licks are a precursor to what would come years later with Jimi Hendrix using Berry's tricks tenfold.
This album is collection of hit singles from the time of Elvis Presely, Buddy Holly, Del Shannon, and other rock and roll innovators. The most popular of course is "Johnny B. Goode." It a song about a guitar player with a dream and the talent to make it a reality. This landmark song was said to be partly autobiographical, inspired by Berry's great keyboard player Johnnie Johnson. Johnson was an influential contributor to Berry's overall sound. Berry also grew up on Goode Avenue in St. Louis, possibly the origin of the song name.
The drag racing "Maybellene" is a neck in neck boogie to the finish line. "Roll Over Beethoven" kicks classical music to side to make way for rock and roll, a new kind of music sure to give its listeners the freedom they are seeking. Another boogie-woogie staple is "Carol," a song covered by many artists, most prominantly the Rolling Stones.
Berry influenced endless numbers of guitar players, singers, and songwriters. This album pinpoints his most important rock and roll recordings, music that paved the way for future generations of aspiring artists. John Lennon once famously said, "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry."
