Easy Star All-Stars - Radiodread
- Radiodread, an album by the Easy Star All-Stars, was a risky proposition. An album of Radiohead covers done in a dub or reggae style risked alienating Radiohead fans who might feel that the covers are bad, and it also risked alienating reggae fans for whom Radiohead was too weird. Also, it was a sophomore album. Had it gone poorly, it may have been the end. Luckily, what they have created is a fantastic reinterpretation of Radiohead’s seminal 1995 album, “OK Computer.” Although it requires a little manipulation, these reggae covers sound natural.
A great cover discovers elements of a song that are overlooked, and brings them out. What the All-Stars have focused on is the tempo and the basslines. Radiohead usually uses rock-n-roll 4/4 time signature. To create a more laid back dub sound, the All-Stars have slowed down the tempo to something more appropriate to reggae. Also, in Radiohead’s music, the basslines tend to get overlooked. Bass is a big part of the dub sound, and it does exist within the Radiohead sound. This album is a perfect example of what good covers sound like, and why covers are important.
