Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
- The last time we heard Jenny Lewis, she had left the company as front woman of her band, Rilo Kiley, to pursue a solo career. The move served her well--Lewis added the Watson Twins to her songs to produce folksy acoustic ditties with great harmonies and great soul. On her second album, titled "Acid Tongue," Lewis elaborates on her collaborative spirit by adding many new voices to her tracks--fellow indie artist and boyfriend Jonathan Rice, rock legend Elvis Costello and recent country-esque actress turned singer Zooey Deschanel all make an appearance. Although Lewis's lyrics cover some of her treasured issues like heartbreak of dysfunctional life and the questioning of God, her soft guitars have been replaced by and large by electric arrangements, most noticeably on "The Next Messiah." Lewis is also perceptibly more delicate and higher pitched on many of her vocals, especially on heartfelt songs like "Bad Man's World" and "Godspeed," where piano chords and sliding strings work together beautifully. The closing track, "Sing a Song for Them," is a great ballad in which Lewis calls on the happy to notice the struggles of the oppressed of every fashion--as Jenny herself once faced trouble as a struggling artist.
