Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
- Phoenix seems to have exploded onto the indie music scene with their latest album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.” After an appearance on SNL in April, this French band has effortlessly won over an American audience. “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” is, however, not the first, but the fourth album from Phoenix and each album is better than the last.
Featuring upbeat, catchy lyrics Phoenix’s brand of europop is completely engaging. With poppy tones with a touch of an electronica sound that is increasingly of the moment, every track proves that Phoenix is a band at the top of their game.
“Litzomania” and “1901” are prime examples of the light, radio-friendly, danceable side of Phoenix. Their quick tempos and melodic hooks make them instant mood lifters. On the other side of things, tracks like “Love Like a Sunset,” which is almost completely devoid of lyrics, explore the depths of the band’s instrumental side.
Phoenix’s last album, 2006’s “If I Ever Feel Better,” was rock influenced and stripped down instrumentally. While these roots are present in “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix,” the band seems to have worked hard to create something new. The album is undeniably modern with each song ringing true to the musical mood of Spring and Summer 2009.
The title of Phoenix’s album, though a bit pretentious, isn’t far off from the content. They are a talented band and this album may very well be their own work of genius. The ten years they’ve spent honing their sound have most definitely paid off. Hopefully, it just gets better from here, for the band and their listeners.
