Ace Hood - Ruthless
- Ace Hood raps as if he’s an NFL half back. He’s handed the ball, in this case the mic. Then he hits the hole, for argument’s sake his verse, with enough force to bowl over any potential obstacles. And from there, he’s run without looking back. Some running attacks can be formidable, as Ace is sometimes, but more often a balanced offense is more effective, and such is the case for Ace Hood and “Ruthless.” The second CD from one of rap’s youngest artists works well in short yardage downs, but when it comes to long range attacks, or any kind of stretch plays, Ace Hood isn’t the man to call on.
Less than eight months since his debut album, “Gutta,” Florida rapper Ace Hood delivers “Ruthless,” a similar sampling of Ace’s ferocious, boisterous flow that never touches upon the profound or insightful. Rather, Ace raps about money, cars, and fame with the help of some industry heavyweights. Rick Ross lends help on “Get Money,” the album’s opening track, and a perfect song to ride out to while the top's down and the sun’s shining.
Ace puts his features to good use throughout the disc. The Jeremiah assisted “Love Somebody” is a change of tone but not pace. Ace still raps in all caps, but the laid-back back beat and vocals from Jeremiah provide a workable contrast.
The album’s shining moment though, is its most recognizable. “Overtime,” the album’s first single, lets Ace’s adrenaline pumping verses take reign in a sports context. Akon sings the hook while Ace provides his most fitting single to date.
And it’s no question why. Ace’s running back style delivery is perfect for arena music, whether before or after the game.
