In Flames - A Sense of Purpose
- In flames has always been melodic. Lately, though, they have lost some of the more extreme elements of their sound, and created a sound which is less thrashy, perhaps even less metal. At times, it sounds as though they are singing power pop songs. This has to do with the fact that the music is heavily scripted. Which is to say, improvisation is kept to a minimum. When the base is muted to allow for a break, the guitar and drum fills are usually simple, very catchy riffs. Which is where this band makes its mark. Although they’re not as brutal as they have been, years of making music have taught them how to write a catchy song. Even a metal purist will find himself bobbing his head at some point. Then later, he will be unable to get the song out of his head.
