Bobby Darin - The Hit Singles Collection
- Bobby Darin had the simple yet powerful voice of the soulful, swinging crooner that he was, and on record, still is. “The Hit Singles Collection” is the perfect album to be introduced to his talent.
Darin started wailing out rock and roll in its heyday and soon moved on to jazz standards. His most famous was “Beyond the Sea” and maybe his most brilliant was his version of “Mack the Knife.”
Darin was an all around entertainer. He danced and swung to the music and gave his performance the resultant bop it asked for. In a song like “Clementine,” Darin could ride on top of a song, building its power and volume while the song continued to build behind him.
When you hear the words of “Artificial Flowers,” it can be understood and appreciated by the approach he took to it. You can hear him wail it out like a baseball player hits a ball out of the park. You can hear a similar pattern in “Lazy River,” starting out slow and getting down into the sex of it.
This is the voice of a man completely in touch with the music he sang. His effortlessness is revealed by his shear power. Darin was not supposed to live longer than he did. He suffered from a rheumatic heart ailment and died during open heart surgery in 1973. He was only 37.
Darin was, at different points of his career: a rock and roller, a standard singer, and a folk singer. Near the end of his career, he was all at once.
