Everybody Loves You

Kaki King, one of the most exciting musicians in alternative music, began as a solo guitar instrumental act. Her debut album, "Everybody Loves You," features some of the most expressive and listenable instrumental music perhaps ever put to record. "Everybody Loves You" is full of musical surprises, as King's guitar technique and unique tunings give the album a completely one-of-a-kind sound. When listening to this, it's hard not to feel that everything King does in each composition is done for a reason.

King's technique on this album is what makes it shine. She employs fingertapping with both hands. This essentially translates to a way of playing a guitar that is more like playing a piano. The harmonies and rhythms seem simply impossible for one guitar to do on its own. And yet, for as dense as her playing is, it never seems overwhelming or excessive.

Instrumental music has a way of alienating a majority of the music listening public because it seems to be emotionally lacking and people have a hard time connecting to it. But "Everybody Loves You" is somehow far easier to relate to than most other instrumental music. Each composition evokes its own emotions, whether it's inward thinking, sadness, or playfulness.

While the album does feel very intentional, it is clearly very heavily improvised as well. It is as if each song is a musical snapshot of Kaki's feelings at the time of recording. Her control over the instrument allows her to express herself; however, she sees fit without relying at all on lyrics. This power of expression is what makes "Everybody Loves You" a special listen.
