Filling up the City

As advancements in home technology make electronic music easier and easier to make, it is inevitable that more and more people will be making electronic music. Recently, the scene has experienced an influx of bands and people making a more ambient technological music that strays from traditional dance music, both in its ambience, and in its beats, which tend to stem more from hip-hop than house music. One of these DJ's is Pretty Lights, a suitable name for their sound. Their music follows a definite formula, which consists of beginning with a single melody which plays throughout the song, and upon which the DJ adds embellishments and samples. Unfortunately, these embellishments do not change or add anything essential to the song. The samples and embellishments, specifically, do not include anything new into the beat. For example, many DJs use samples to put an emphasis on a beat, to make it "stomp" or to use syncopation. These samples simply flow at the same rate. Pretty Lights makes solid electronic music, but nothing special or new. It's basic trip-hop.
