Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
- At first listen, Crystal Castles' debut album may sound like a series of pixilated noise and sounds reminiscent of video games from the '80s, and in a way, it is. But add to that the urgent, sometimes yelled vocals and the driven, pulsating beats and you have an album full of catchy, danceable music, worthy of any fan of electronic and dance music. Songs such as “Alice Practice” and “Air War” have the band’s frenetic, glitch sound while still maintaining a beat and a sense of melody. You can feel the energy of these songs, almost as if you were in a crowded club waving around a glowstick and dancing to the beat.
The album is not all about nonstop energy, however, Songs such as “Vanished” and “Knights” have a more droning, mellow quality which lend themselves well to the energy of other songs. It’s possible to listen to this album all the way through, both in a nonstop dance session or sitting perfectly still, caught in a trance by the beat, a very versatile quality that’s difficult to achieve. Not all songs are memorable, some suffer from their glitchy, '80s sound and are rather forgettable if not unlistenable, resulting in an album that’s not entirely even. Despite the unevenness, and the fact that this kind of music is not entirely new or innovative, “Crystal Castles” is a fun, energetic album worth dancing to or getting lost in.
