Breach
Shivaree is a very cinematic band with a smooth, sexy espionage feel to their music. They are unlike many bands: very original and talented at their originality.
They take influence from artists like Brian Eno, Roxy Music and the Waterboys; some of whose music is featured on this album. Shivaree is probably best recognized by Americans for their song, "Goodnight Moon," which was featured on the soundtrack for "Kill Bill Vol. 2."
On the "Breach" EP, a precursor to the full album, "Who's Got Trouble?," the band sounds like a tight knit group working simply for the beauty of their art. This is how all music should be recorded and created. Ambrosia Parsley's lead vocals are essential in giving the band their uniqueness. You can hear how "right" the band sounds playing cover songs they love and originals they are proud of. "I Close My Eyes" must be the best song on the record. It is a sultry original song evoking images of a fantastic dream state.
"Fear Is a Man's Best Friend" makes John Cale's original and everybody else's cover version sound effortless. The same goes for Brian Eno's "The Fat Lady of Limbourg." Shivaree's version is way more inviting and robotic. The album ends calmly with "657 Bed B." The female and male voices complement each other perfectly. The song sounds like a lullaby for a baby before going to bed.
Shivaree formed in 1999 and had a much bigger impact overseas. However, their lack of fame does not diminish their brilliance or style.
