Kaki King - Legs to Make Us Longer
- Kaki King’s sophomore album, “Legs to Make Us Longer,” continues what was started with her debut, “Everybody Loves You.” The album consists primarily of solo acoustic guitar tracks, though this time around she contributes vocals on one tune, a trend that would come to dominate her future efforts. “Legs to Make Us Longer” eschews much of the playfulness of the first album, and as a result, some of the unique essence of her debut is lost. This is both a good and bad direction for the album. The album does feel a bit like a transitional work between her instrumental earlier work and her more pop, electric oriented later albums.

King’s virtuosic complex approach to the guitar is still in fine form on tracks like “Lies,” “Solipsist,” and “Neanderthal,” which are reminiscient of her debut album. The album brings a much darker, haunting sound to her repertoire with “All the Landslides Birds Have Seen” and “Frame.” “Legs to Make Us Longer” separates itself from King’s debut album most noticeably in its use of electric guitar and other instruments such as drums, all played by King herself. The album’s most noticeable departure comes in the album’s final track, “My Insect Life,” in which Kaki makes her lyrical and vocal debut (at least as far as her own albums are concerned).

Overall, the album is a weaker outing than her magical debut. Its darker tone adds new dimensions to her music, but many of the tracks lack the unique sense of storytelling that defined “Everybody Loves You.” The album is still pretty strong as a whole, however, and Kaki proves that she is still one of the most talented artists out there.
