This is the One
Many do not know who Hikaru Utada is, however they will get to know her listening to her upcoming album, "This is the One." Utada...-as she likes to be called...-had the largest first-week sales for any album in Japanese music history by selling three million copies. Now she is trying to accomplish that in the U.S.
Her first single, "Come Back to Me" is a song about cheating in a relationship and asking that person for forgiveness. As the song begins, you hear a theatrical sound with the piano keys and then Utada's sweet voice sings the first verse. Her clever lyrics are what make the song enjoyable. She sings, "I wish that I could photoshop all our bad memories/because the flashbacks, oh the flashbacks/won't leave me alone." It is a gloomy song, but you'll get caught up into the lyrics.
"Apple and Cinnamon" has a fun beat; however the song is not exciting. Utada sings about unpredictable relationships and how things could be so sweet "like apple and cinnamon" and then become sour. Her simile, "chemistry like apple and cinnamon" is a fresh and unique idea that no other pop singer has used.
"On and On" is definitely a dance track for the club or a party. The 26-year-old doesn't forget anyone in this song when she sings the chorus: "Honeys, if you're gay, burn it up, like a gay parade/Honeys, if you're straight, bump it up, take it all away/Intoxicated, emancipated, unapologetic's what I am today." Another track "Dirty Desire" is exactly what it sounds like. Utada shows a different side in this flirty yet sexy song. The ambiguity in her lyrics "And in my fantasies I love you long time/doing my nine to five/I'm thinking six and nine" make the song less raunchy but more creative.
"This is the One" is an album that has a little bit of everything from "break up" songs, love songs to party songs. Utada is not only a good songwriter and producer, but she is a great singer as well.
