The Very Best of The Stone Roses
This "Best of" album comes from a truly underrated band. The Stone Roses are largely under-represented in pop culture history. This may be because egos ended the band before they had a chance to reach wider exposure, or perhaps the grunge movement hogged all of the attention of the pop music world in the early nineties. Either way, The Stone Roses left behind a handful of excellent tunes through their two albums. "The Very Best" contains most of the two albums they released, including all of their singles. Given that their two albums have very different sounds, the duality shows in this greatest hits collection. While their first album "The Stone Roses" favored a more psychedelic, new wave-tinged sound, "Second Coming" was dominated by heavy guitar licks and a bluesy tone.
Songs such as "I Wanna Be Adored" (my favorite), "She Bangs The Drums", and "Fools Gold" represent the band's '80s-influenced sound. "Begging You" and "Love Spreads" showcase the guitar heavy sound of their second album. "The Very Best of The Stone Roses" does a good job representing both albums, though it favors their first album, which has since become a somewhat iconic recording in the UK. The album represents a unique band's all-too-short career and is a good place to start for anyone curious about The Stone Roses.
