Doug Folkins' fifth album, "Another Last Call" has a folk rock sound mixed with country and Celtic. This album is definitely a surprise to ears that are unfamiliar with this genre. Folkins sings all of his songs from experience and it is obvious that he takes great pride in his music.
"Pour Me Another" has a sweet melody; however the lyrics drown you. The meaning of the track is drinking your pain away as an escape from reality. The song is mediocre with a catchy chorus, "Pour me another/My insides twist about/I am drinking away my two weeks of pain/Send it all to blackouts." "Pour Me Another" is simple and straight to the point.
Another song that mentions drinking is "Park The Car," which has a vague meaning. If you plan on listening to this song over and over to understand the meaning, you will never get it. There is a tongue twister in the chorus when he sings, "Don't park the car far from the bar she says/ don't park the car far from the bar." Despite the lyrics, Folkins has a strong voice.
"See You Smiling" is the best track off the album. It is a about losing the "one that got away" and all the regrets you might have. Folkins gets emotional when you hear, "When I see you smiling it breaks my heart/And I think about what could've been or should've been with you then."
Overall, "Another Last Call" is a challenging album that needs your undivided attention as you are listening to it. His fans will appreciate his fifth album.
