Children of Bodom - Are you Dead Yet?
- For a metal band, Children of Bodom has an increasingly diverse sound. The music that they make falls somewhere in between power metal and symphonic death metal, and they constantly modulate between the two, sometimes favoring the characteristics of one above the other and vice-versa. Despite this, they have maintained characteristics of their music, creating an undeniably original sound which is unmistakable. This particular sound comes together on their latest album, “Are you Dead Yet?”

The first thing one notices about the album is Janne Wirman’s keyboard. When introducing keyboards into heavy metal music, a band runs the risk of creating an overly dramatic sound which comes out cheesy. Usually this happens when the keys are providing a backing tone to be played over. COB avoids this problem in excellent fashion, and is saved from cheesiness by the sheer virtuosity of the keyboard playing. The skill of the keyboardist is matched, if not overshadowed entirely by Guitar World Magazine's 16th fastest shredder ever, Alexi Laiho. His playing on this album is jaw-dropping incredible, and, like on many of COBs other CDs, makes the album.
