Crosby, Stills and Nash
In the modern musical landscape, Crosby, Stills & Nash's unique blend of acoustic folk, subdued rock n' roll, and otherworldly vocal harmonies seems more relevant than ever. This is particularly evident in the stylistic resurgence of vocal harmonies in indie rock over the last few years. Many of the characteristics of today's most cutting edge underground music find their roots in music such as CSN's. However, few can do it better.
Their self-titled debut album demonstrates the mellow, deceptively simple nature that would come to define the band's music. "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Marrakesh Express" are upbeat acoustic rock songs with dense organs and vocal harmonies. "Guinnevere" seems particularly in tune with today's musical trends. Complex, interlocking guitars and lush vocal work set a blueprint for bands like Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective. This incredible vocal chemistry is what helps define this album, the band, and their sound as a whole. "Helplessly Hoping," were it not for its very 1960s-style delivery, might be confused for anything on indie radio today. The album isn't afraid to let loose every once in awhile, while keeping true with CSN's style, of course. "Pre-Road Downs," "Wooden Ships," and "Long Time Gone" feature bundles of Stills's brilliantly rockin' electric guitar work.
While much of the hippie image that CSN exudes has faded from popular culture today, the music they created is perhaps more directly influential now than it has ever been. This record is excellent in that it sounds great the first time you listen to it, but only gets better as you notice more nuance each time through. Ideal for a mellow summer barbeque with friends.
